35 Years on from The Attempted Coup in Trinidad & Tobago
In 1990 The Jamaat al Muslimeen group attempted to overthrow the government of Trinidad and Tobago. This radical extremist group led by Yasin Abu Bakr held hostages – including the Prime Minister A.N.R Robinson - at the Red House parliamentary building in Port of Spain. The BBC covered the event extensively – largely thanks to Kate Adie on the ground and The BBC’s Caribbean Service, whose reporters Rickey Singh and Jeremy Taylor in Trinidad and Jerry Timmins in London served all outlets. Here (in no particular order) you can find a range of that output. You can find out more at T&T Guardian and Caribbean Intelligence. 24 people were killed in the failed coup attempt.
